Day 1
Sunday, April 29, 2001
Hooray, Gene and I are going to Disney World alone and there are a lot of firsts this time! This is the first time we've stayed at the new Animal Kingdom Lodge and Gene doesn't know it, but it's the first time we'll be in concierge. I've arranged this as a surprise for him and I've managed to not spill the beans.
The Animal Kingdom Lodge is beautiful! We pull up under the porte cochere at 9:45 am. and Khalid comes out to get our luggage. I try to pull him aside and tell him that we're in concierge without Gene hearing me, but Kahlid is new and not entirely sure what to do.
He loads our luggage onto the little cart and says, "That's concierge, right?
Gene says, "No!"
And I say, "Yes!"
Then Gene says, "No!"
And I say, "Yes!"
And then Gene says, "Yes???"
And off we go to the concierge. Now the Animal Kingdom Lodge is only 2 week old and there are a lot of bugs to be worked out. I'm not entirely pleased with my concierge experience, but all of the cast members were very friendly and I think the problems have been worked out, so there's no point in dwelling on them.
Our Room is ready and The View is incredible. Once we get settled in, we head for Epcot.
Our first stop is Ice Station Cool to sip some different drink flavors (but not Beverly!)
We take the boat across the lake and arrive at Morocco. After a little bit of exploring, we work our way...
...over to Japan.
And decide to have lunch at Tempura Kiku, where Gene can fill up on sushi. I don't eat sushi, but that was fine because the tempura shrimp was wonderful.
We thoroughly explore Italy and then decide to head back to the Animal Kingdom Lodge.
Back at the lodge, we decide to try out the pool. Soon it's time to get ready for dinner at Jiko, the lodge's upscale restaurant, at 8:15. The food is just as good as everyone says and I strongly recommend this restaurant.
